Definition : Natural fiber dressings derived from seaweed containing calcium or sodium salts of alginic acid. These dressings are usually nonadhesive; they become a hydrophilic gel when in contact with wet wounds. Alginate dressings are intended to absorb wound exudates and maintain a moist environment; they are used mainly in the wound management.
