Definition : Dental casting materials, whose components are nonprecious metal alloys, designed to make a positive copy of a given area of the oral cavity using a mold previously taken at the dentist's office. These dental materials consist of alloys made of nonprecious metals (e.g., copper, zinc, tin, nickel). The materials are usually poured into a mold which contains a hollow cavity of an appropriate shape to fit teeth and/or oral tissue, allowed to solidify and then ejected or broken out of the mold to complete the process. They are typically resistant to corrosion and tarnish and should be compatible with oral tissues. Nonprecious casting materials are used in dental laboratories for inlays, frameworks for fixed prostheses and partial dentures, for restoration posts, dental cores, and splints.
