Definition : Microbiology laboratory blood culture analyzers that automatically test blood cultures, process test data, and generate an interpretation of test results using computing programs. These analyzers detect carbon dioxide produced by microorganisms using radiometric or infrared spectrophotometry or detect microbial activity using photometric or fluorimetric measurements. Other analyzers use microcalorimetry, pH, electrical impedance, or flow cytometry techniques. Automated blood culture analyzers are used in laboratories that perform large quantities of tests, providing more accurate results and increasing productivity when compared to manual analyzers. Some blood culture analyzers can also be used to detect microbial growth in other body fluids.
